Amanda Nunes vs Irene Aldana
Queen Nunes has beaten literally everyone in the who’s who of women’s mma, dethroning 5 former UFC champions including the short title reign of Julianna Pena.
She has defended the bantamweight title 6 times consequtively in the ufc and her featherweight title 3 times to:
Chris cyborg , Felicia Spence and Megan Anderson
all of which are now retired from the sport, except Cyborg who left the UFC promotion on her own terms.

You would think, with the fastest route to a championship title at Featherweight (as the division is so scarce) there would be more takers, however the title challenges have all but dried up, as no fighters have stepped forward since 2021.

Can Aldana dethrone the QUEEN?

The question is, can Irene Aldana do the immpossible and dethrone the Bantamweight Queen?
The highlight reels for Aldana are hype worthy, but who did aldana really knock out?

Aldana vs Chiasson UFC279

The ranked #10 Macy Chiasson.
They were 19–19 on the score cards, as they entered the 3rd round of their fight and arguably Chiasson was winning until she got stopped by an up-kick to her liver. (check the free fight replay above courtesy of the UFC)

What was clear from that fight, was that Irene is very dangerous on the ground but her take down defence was weak and be sure Amanda could look to captalise on that.

Irene Aldana #4 vs. Yana Santos #5 UFC264

Aldana made quick work knocking out Yana Santos at UFC264 inside the first round.

Irene Aldana #10 vs Ketlen Vieira #2 UFC245

Ketlen was ranked #2 and (4–0 UFC) at the time of their fight and Aldana #10. Ketlen was marked for a possible title shot but Aldana spoiled the day with a beautiful KO finish inside the first round.

Can Irene Aldana go 5 hard rounds?
Irene headlined UFC Fight Island 4, against Holly Holm and that was her first 5 round fight in her fight career in the UFC. The only other time was against retired Tonya Evinger which went 4 rounds in Invictafc.

The Queen Nunes in comparison has fought 5 rounds no less than 5 times in her UFC career and it is unclear if the sheer pace of Amanda will prove too much for Aldana. Although Aldana has beaten 2 top 5 contenders compare these two losses to Amanda Nunes’ resume.

Aldana lost to Holly Holm in a 5 round war.
Amanda Headkicked and Koed Holm all inside the first round.

Irene Aldana lost a 3 round split decision to Rocky Pennington.
Amanda fought Rocky Pennington over 5 rounds and TKOed her with elbows and punches in 2 min. 36 seconds of the 5th round.

Aldana has not beaten the NOW ranked numbers 2 and 3 in the division and a step up to fight the Queen might be asking too much. But hey, when the money is in the duke box it’s time to dance!

Is retirement calling Amanda Nunes?

People are talking like Amanda is fighting off of a loss. She lost a fight and regained the title. Yet there are question marks on her longevity and will she have the desire to keep doing this if she faces another hard war against another hungry fighter considering she was contemplating hanging up the gloves after her loss to Julianna Pena.

Though she has said she has set aside retirement thoughts, heading into UFC289 one can’t help but think she maybe on the verge of retirement, especially if she had to set aside those thoughts. Clearly she is battling with the desire to finally let this all go and after 15 years of fighting and another child on the way, retirement comes to us all sooner or later.

The question just raised by a friend on insta was this, Is Amanda fighting Aldana or retirement?

Based on the evidence, I think it will be a long night for Aldana, the fact she hasn’t beaten the likes of Holm and Pennington who now reign over the divisions number 2 and 3 spots leaves question marks as to just how good she currently is.

The sure bet would be on Nunes, because of her volume of victories and experience, but you and I know anything can happen and a hungry Aldana might be one punch away from the throne.

There remains just one question here today…

Will you be a witness?
